Who Is The Storming Bohemian?

The Storming Bohemian is the professional moniker of Charles Kruger, a former schoolteacher and current Bay area arts practitioner.

In 2009, Charles lost his job as a high school English teacher at the age of 53, and was moved to reevaluate his life. Concerned that his creative years were past, he struggled with depression, and wondered how he could reignite his intellectual, creative, and cultural passion for life.

After much reflection, Charles decided to retire from teaching and not seek another position. Instead he turned his attention to a project he called Storming Bohemia. This consisted of a commitment to attend 90 literary events in 90 days, while documenting his experience on the internet. The goal was to reinvent himself creatively, and try to rediscover an artistic identity which had been lost over a number of years.

The project succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. As The Storming Bohemian Charles has become a well-known figure in the San Francisco literary, artistic, and theatre communities. His project attracted enough attention to warrant reviews in the SF Weekly, the Poetry Foundation website, and even a mention in the New York Times. His experiences reignited his writing life, and he began to appear regularly as a performing poet in venues throughout the Bay area. He has published in literary magazines, as well as becoming a painter and a theatre reviewer. His many projects include:

o Charles Kruger Art (Paintings)

o TheatreStorm, a theatre review site, for which he has been identified in the SF Weekly as “the preeminent reviewer of small theatre in the Bay area.”

o Founding and serving on the board of Bay Area Generations, a leading literary performance series.

o Contributing two regularly featured columns for the national literary and cultural website, The Rumpus (Notable SF and The Storming Bohemian Punks The Muse).

o Other projects have included writing for the literary website LitSeen, and serving as a founding Board Member of the popular Quiet Lightning literary performance series.

Charles is a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle and studied acting professionally at the University of California, Irvine.  He holds a Masters in Theatre Arts from California State University, and is a fully credentialed English teacher.
